Operating Principle of Fiber Optic Fusion Splice
Time: 2015-07-28 10:55:51     Copyfrom: volsun

Usually for fiber optic connectors, a fiber optic fusion splice is used to protect a single optical fiber except optical ribbon cables.

Optical fiber thermal protection tube is mainly used for bare fiber part of the single-core optical fiber splicing, inner tube for hot-melt tube, the outer tube is a transparent heat shrink tube, the middle is reinforcement. As below picture show, reinforcement is generally stainless steel holding or ceramic quartz hands holding.

When you are heating it, hot melt tube melting and tightly wrapped the optical fiber splice after welding, fill and seal the spaces.the reinforcement make the functions of support and tensile bending. Heat shrink tube heat and shrink, tightly wrapped the optical fiber splice,hot-melting tube and reinforcement, form a whole, increase mechanical strength of fiber joint part, while prevent moisture invaded,in order to maintain long-term stable of fiber transmission performance.

When using the fiber optic fusion splice to protect fiber we should noticed several points.

Firstly, avoid residual air bubbles in the protection tube, in order to ensure the reliability and long-term temperature characteristic of optical fiber connector.

Secondly, impose a uniform tension on the fiber to ensure fiber in a straight line of the protection tube.

Thirdly, avoid fiber twisted to prevent micro-bend toll increase.

Fourthly, the tension can’t be imposed too big to avoid fiber increased crack damage.

Fifth, after full contraction of the fiber optic fusion splice, cooling and shaping and then release the tension in order to avoid micro-bend in the fiber-optic local uneven heating or macro-bending.
