What is cold shrink technology?

In order to provide a tight-fitting protective seal around stranded and solid wires, connections, joints, and terminals, electrical installers often choose shrink tubes. Shrink technology comes in two forms, heat and cold. These products can be widely used in electrical insulation, mechanical protection, environmental sealing and stress relief industries, such as back-end connector sealing, branching and transition from connector to cable.

The well-known heat shrink technnology utilizes materials in the form of artificially expanded plastic tubes. When exposed to heat, the tube shrinks to insulate the cable joint or terminal from water, dust and other debris. For a wide range of applications, cold shrink technology provides similar functions as heat shrink technology, but does not require a heat source.

Cold shrink cable accessories are usually made of materials such as rubber and silicone, which have high elasticity at ambient temperature. What all applications have in common is that they are designed with a removable internal support system to prevent recovery before installation.

For cold shrink products, the inner supporting core of the extended will be removed during installation. Subsequently, the cold shrink tube narrows around the remaining material inside and the product is completed with a tightly supporting core whose diameter is much smaller than the original cold shrink product. It allows neat installation on the prepared cable in a compact environment.
